PDXCESS (Portland, OR) - December 21, 1992 |
We have no idea how Prosto sounds, and for the most
part we have no idea what they're saying. How could we - they're from
Khabarovsk in the former Soviet Union. But that doesn't matter, we
think you should go to this show anyway. How often do you have a
chance to experience a true post-cold war cultural exchange in the
darkened confines of Satyricon? Although most of the band's songs are
in Russian, their press release promises CCR "Suzy Q" and the Kinks "I
need you" in English renditions. Their release also gives a clue to
their sound: "When we play, people dance," says lead guitarist Dmitry
Barmin. |
PDXCESS (Portland, OR) - January 4, 1993 |
Back in the former U.S.S.R., classic rock band "Prosto" ("Simply") was
finding it hard to Portland's Russian sister city Khabarovsk. The
band's sponsor pulled out at the last minute, the airport wouldn't
issue tickets and the plane wasn't leaving because of fuel shortages.
But luckily, a certain embassy official was a Who fan, so rock'n'roll
was saved the day as guitarist Dmitry Barmin, a former Lewis and Clark
exchange student, and his group finally made it to San Francisco,
where L & C students picked them up and brought them to Portland.
Crazy, no? Prosto plays originals and covers, like CCR's "Suzie Q"
9:30 p.m. Friday at the Dakota Cafe (239 S.W. Broadway). |
